The school board hired a new principal for Big Bear High School. Mike Ghelber comes to Big Bear from Indio High School where he has been serving as Assistant Principal. Ghelber replaces Dr. Rick Jameson who left Big Bear for Orange County. Mike is originally from Wyoming and is happy to be returning to a small town atmosphere. He and his wife Susan, son Brett, age 10 and daughter Hailey, age 11, will be moving to Big Bear in the next few weeks. Mike was a former English teacher and athletic director. WELCOME TO BIG BEAR MIKE!!!

There was a nice article in the July 4th Grizzly about Sgt. Aaron Botenhagen who just returned after a third tour of duty in Iraq. His younger brother, Pfc. Kevin Botenhagen has just completed Marine Corps field artillery school at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Kevin is a 2006 graduate of Big Bear High and played football all four years. Blessings upon both boys as they serve our country.

I took this clip from the Grizzly newspaper.

Hall finishes fifth in Atlanta race
Sunday, July 8, 2007 4:30 PM PDT

A second-half surge provided Big Bear native Ryan Hall with a solid finish at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race July 4. The 10,000-meter road race was won by Martin Irungu of Kenya, who ran 28 minutes and 1 second. Arizona native Abdi Abdirahman, who ran the course in 28:11, finished second.

Hall ran to a fifth-place finish, turning in a time of 28:34 and earning $8,000. Running from behind is not a familiar place for Hall, who has been used to running in the front since his high school days. "I was thinking about (Italian Olympic gold medalist Stefano) Baldini and how he runs," Hall said. "I learned a lot in London. I thought 'I've got to be smart like him, without being up front.'" In the women's race, Sara Hall, Ryan's wife, took home $3,000 for her fourth-place finish. Sara ran the women's 10,000 meter race in 32:57. She originally did not plan to run the race and was in Atlanta to support her husband.

Way to go Ryan and Sara!!!!

From Randy Perkins on 7/31/07
Dearest family and friends,

Early this morning, our amazing mother, wife, friend, daughter, and sister, was called by the Lord into His Kingdom of Paradise. She traveled peacefully and without pain after having spent the last 10 days with all her loved ones in San Diego Hospice. She would want you all to know that she was never afraid of this moment as her faith in God's plan endured throughout her battle with her disease. We never knew when He was going to call her to Heaven, but we do know that Lori will be missedhere on earth. Her compassion for all people and her dedication to her family and friends were unwavering during her long and fulfilling 53 years here on earth. We, the Perkins family, would like to thank you for your constant love and support during the last 19 months since she was diagnosed with her disease. To see the outpouring of friendship and generosity only makes us that much more certain about what a great Friend Lori was to so many people. We will never forget all the cards, visits, flowers, angels, and prayers that were bestowed with love upon our dear Lori. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

In celebration of her life, we will be holding a memorial service on Monday, August 6th at 4 p.m. Pastor Steve Murray will lead us in thanksgiving for her life at the Good Samaritan Episcopal Church Located on the corner of Eastgate Mall and Genessee Avenue in the UTC area. The address is 4321 Eastgate Mall, San Diego, CA, 92121. We will be continuing the celebration of her life at our home on 7712 Moonridge Place in La Jolla. Please feel free to forward this email to all Those who would like to share in honoring Lori at this special event. In lieu of flowers, we are asking that you share a special memory you Had with Lori. You can mail it to The Perkins Family at 7712 Moonridge Place, La Jolla, CA 92037 or email it to us at

With love and peace,
