Foundation Annual Dinner
Sunday evening, June 10, The Stephen G. Mihaylo/Big Bear High School
Education Foundation distributed their annual scholarships. $46,000 was
given to approximately 38 students. It was overwhelming to see the
talent come across the stage and receive the scholarships. Many thanks to
Neal Waner, Foundation President for providing leadership for the foundation
Board, to Dr. Russ Reynolds who directs the scholarship committee, to Phil
Hamilton, Masters of Ceremony for the event, to Marie Wanke who organized
the dinner and reservations, to Northwoods who was wonderful to work with
for the dinner, to the many contributors who have given so generously for
the scholarships and of course a big THANK YOU to Steve Mihaylo who matches
every dollar we raise. Neal announced that the Foundation endowment has now
reached $1,000,000. We have such a wonderful dedicated board who works hard
to continue to raise funds for scholarships and the mini-grant program and
the after school program. Neal Waner, President of the Foundation,
announced the beginning of a five year capital campaign for scholarships.
The goal is to raise $500,000 from alumni and friends of Big Bear High and
Stephen Mihaylo has agreed to match any monies given to the foundation up to
$500,000. It was a wonderful evening with 260 people in attendance.
Hall Takes Second in the State Meet
Chad Hall finished second in the State 3,200 meter race in Sacramento on June 1. Chad has also been named the
National High School Coaches Association Boys Cross County Senior Athlete of
the Year. Chad will run his last race for Big Bear High in Greensboro, N.C.
at the Nike Outdoor Nationals held from June 14 to June 16. Chad appeared
on Television on Prime Ticket the past two weekends running in the CIF
finals and the State Finals. He has been awarded a scholarship to Oregon
University where he will participate in one of the premiere track programs
in the United States. Chad, you make us proud!!!!! I talked to Mickey Hall,
father of these nationally recognized runners recently and about his whole
family. Theirs is a blessed family!!!!! Way to go Mom and Dad Hall!!!
Another award for Kriss Proctor.
It was great to learn this week that Big
Bear High School Football player, Junior, Kriss Proctor was named 2006/2007
San Bernardino County "Athlete of the Year" by the Press Enterprise. Kriss
was a three sport star for Big Bear High School this year playing football,
basketball and baseball. Remember he is only a junior this year and will
lead the Bears Football Team as quarterback next fall. Kriss was really
impressive in the summer passing leagues last week along with the receivers.
It will be tough to surpass last years 14 - 0 record but we are on our way.
Hope you can join us for some of the games next fall. I also just found out
that homecoming will be Saturday, September 8th this year. Hope to see you
all there. Go Bears!!!!
Capital Campaign for the Foundation
The Foundation announced the formal kick off of a $1,000,000 capital
campaign at the annual dinner on June 10th. The goal is to receive both
contributions and pledges paid in over a five years with the final result of
adding another $1,000,000 to the endowment. With $2,000,000 in the
endowment, the foundation will be able to distribute over $100,000 per year
for scholarships and mini grants in perpetuity. While $1,000,000 is a lofty
goal, the campaign committee working in conjunction with an outside
fundraising firm put together a plan of raising $250,000 from key donors,
$250,000 from alumni and the community, which would be matched by Steve
The good news is that the key donors have already committed just over
$500,000 to the campaign, and Steve has again graciously agreed to match it.
So now the goal is higher and the committee will endeavor to raise $250,000
from the community and alumni. The new campaign goal is $1,500,000. If you
would like to be a contributor to the capital campaign, or better yet, be
willing to share this great story with your fellow classmates, let us know.
You can respond to this email or send us a note (or check) to the SGM/BBHS
Education Foundation, P.O. Box 1529, Big Bear Lake, California, 92315. We
are non-profit foundation and all gifts are tax deductible. Since inception
just nine years ago, this foundation has distributed over $300,000 in
scholarships and mini grants. By increasing the endowment we both increase
the level of support for students in Bear Valley, and also insure that this
support continues in perpetuity.
