It is with great sadness that I report that one of our alumni, Jared
Landaker, who graduated in the class of 1999 and was a 1998 First Team
All-CIF Defensive Back in football, was killed in a helicopter crash in Iraq
yesterday. Jared was an officer and helicopter pilot in the U.S. Marine
Corps. His mother, Laura Landaker, was a former district employee
According a news report on MSN, the CH-46 Sea Knight, a Marine transport
helicopter, crashed northwest of Baghdad yesterday and was the fifth
helicopter downed in the last two weeks. Seven people were killed (two Navy
and five Marines). There has been no confirmation if Jared was the pilot or
More than 800 people attended the funeral serviced of Jared at the Community
Church on Saturday, February 17. Jared was honored by the Marines and the
entire Bear Valley community as a hero. He will be missed.
Grace Bast passes away.
I received the following email from Trudy (Bast)
Hi Mr. and Mrs. Waner,
When I received an email from Trudy I wrote:
In case you hadn't heard, my mother, Grace Bast, passed away on Monday
(February 12) at her home. She had fallen and had a heart attack so it all
went very quickly. We are very thankful that it did and that she was home
where she wanted to be. The AAUW is setting up a scholarship fund in her
name for this June and we thought that was great. I thought about the
alumni newsletter, and even though she wasn't alumni, alot of us knew her,
and wondered if maybe an announcement could be made in it. Ron and I are
keeping the house for the family so I will be up from time to time. Ellen
Conklin is heading the AAUW fund, as she was a member and had taken mom to
the meetings alot in the last few years. If you have any questions, please
email me or you can call me at home. 909-626-1581.
Thanks for you help and thoughts.
We had not heard about your mothers passing. Yes, I will put a
note in the Big Bear High alumni newsletter which will go out next week.
Was there a funeral or any memorial services? You mom was Neal's teacher in
kindergarten. She was highly respected by the students, staff and parents.
She was a wonderful lady and our family has many good memories. Please tell
the family we are praying for them.

It is nice to see a TV station returning to Big Bear High School. Around
'72-'73 former BBHS instructor Gary Moran built one from the ground up,
using his excellent negotiating skills to get the necessary production
equipment donated from LA TV stations. Gary's vision, dedication, and
talent---criminally underappreciated by his fellow faculty at the
time---gave a number of us our successful start in the very competitive
TV/Video Production business.
Directly, or indirectly, I owe just about everything good in my life to that
gifted, dedicated teacher.
So hats off to Gary Moran, and all the very best to the revived BBHS

On to Saint Patrick's Day. !!!! Al
