SGM Big Bear High School Education Foundation Alumni Newsletter
July 9, 2006
Graduation is over at the High School and school is out for the summer in
Big Bear. Students return to school on August 1. The school district is
back on the "Traditional Year Round Calendar".
Pelletier is moving to Ballard school district.
Allan Pelletier, Superintendent of schools resigned on June 19 ending 12
years with the schools in Big Bear. Allan is taking a one-school district
next to Solvang in the beautiful Santa Yenez Valley. The K-8 school has 120
students and Allan will be the Superintendent-Principal. Allan has stated
that is was a difficult decision for him. He has enjoyed the five years as
principal of Big Bear Elementary School, five years at the district office
as director of curriculum and the last two years as superintendent. One of
the added benefits in making the move was to allow Tina, Allan's wife, to be
closer to an airport. Tina travels extensively with her business. We will
miss the Pellitier family and their two girls Alissa and Amy. Amy is best
friend of our granddaughter Tori so we will fell the loss. And who did the
board ask to take the interim superintendent??? Of course, Ron Peavy. So
Ron retirement was a short two years and is now in charge once again of
directing the district during the superintendent search.
ALL YEAR CLASS REUNION
The next big event for alumni will be the ALL YEARS CLASS REUNION set for
September 16 following the High School Homecoming game. We are going to
have the dedication of the naming of the Bob Perkins gym with a dance and
food. If you are willing to serve on the Homecoming Committee please let me
know by email or by calling 909-866-3650. You can even serve on the
committee by sending out e-mails from you home to your fellow classmates
telling them of the event. There will be no charge for the evening as Randy
is going to pay for the event. Dicken Everson is also planning additional
events for the class reunion of 1968 to 1973. Plan to join us for a great
football game and evening on September 16.
High School Alumni Directory
The Steven G. Mihaylo / Big Bear High School Educational Foundation is in
the process of putting out a Big Bear High Directory. The Harris publishing
company will be contacting all alumni of Big Bear High and requesting if you
want to participate in the directory. Our High School has never had a
alumni directory and this has been a major undertaking for the past year.
Be sure and return the information requested from Harris publishing. If you
do not receive any correspondence by August 1, please let me know and we be
sure to add to the mailing.
Great Retirement Parties
Big Bear teachers, Delores Clifton, Mike Clifton, and Rich Benson went out
in style. Cliftons had a wonderful alumni softball game on June 4 with
about 200 people in attendance for the game and pizza and an emotional
farewell. The alumni had a great softball game and former players came from
all over Southern California to play in the game and join in the
celebration. Then on June 24, Phil Hamilton asked Rich Benson to take a
bike ride around the community and when they returned from the bike trip
there were over 60 friends and neighbors of Rich's for a fun filled
bar-b-que at the Bensons. Rich's boys, Rob and Mike, did a fabulous job of
organizing the surprise party. The High School will really miss these
three talented teachers who have contributed so much to the students
throughout the years. They were great teachers, great coaches and Rich has
been a wonderful counselor for the past 15 years. You don't replace these
type of teachers. You just ask new teachers to began a new era for the
students. Allan and Nancy Caldwell will take over Varsity Softball Varsity
and Marjorie Servers and Estelle Hooker will take over the Frosh-Soph
Softball Program. Events like these makes one remember why you live in
Big Bear and are so proud of Big Bear High School and its graduates.
