MISS BIG BEAR 2003 is Kaitlyn Dobis. What made the crowing so special this year was the final two contestants were Kaitlyn and her cousin Morgan Dobis. Yes, you recognize the names. Kaitlyn is the daughter of Mary and Ron Dobis, class of 75 and Morgan is the daughter of Lori and Mark Dobis, class of 74. Talk about home grown beauty!! Besides their beauty the girls are also tremendous athletes and good students. They will be missed next year at Big Bear High.

WOW!!! WHAT A BANQUET at Northwoods Resort for the Steven G. Mihaylo BBHS Education Foundation on June 8th. $16,500 in scholarships were given to 17 students. Coupled with the $41,000 in scholarships awarded to the senior class the preceding week at the awards program and you can see what type of support this community gives to our students. Special thanks to Tom Johnson, Owner and managing partner of Northwoods for the beautiful accommodations; to Eric Thompson, class of 78,chief for the resort for the delicious food; to Ron Peavy, superintendent of the district for the outstanding presentation of the retirees from the district; to Phil Hamilton and Russ Reynolds for the selection and presentation of the scholarships, and to Neal Waner the president of the Foundation for serving as the M.C. At the banquet we were shown a video production of the Foundation students in action. Thanks to Doug Lane for the inspiring video. There were 186 people in attendance and we have almost reached capacity for Northwoods banquet room. Did you make a special effort to be at the banquet? Well, Steve Mihaylo, drove all night Saturday evening from Phoenix and arrived in big Bear at 5:00 a.m. Slept a few hours and then toured Big Bear and found the home he lived in when in high school. Attended the board meeting of the foundation at 3:30 p.m. and then drove home to Phoenix after the banquet at 8:30 p.m. for a 7:00 a.m. meeting on Monday morning in Phoenix. His presence at the Foundation board meeting and the banquet was really uplifting as he he pledged his continued financial support for the Foundation. Thanks Steve. It is great to be a part of such a supporting community. This annual banquet is one of the most uplifting events in our community each year. It has been held on the second Sunday in June. Set that date for next year in your calendar. WHAT AN EVENING!!!

  • Fri, 23 May 2003 From: "Derise Dunlap, Post Falls, Idaho. Dear Al, Thanks for the Alumni news. Good to get it since I live in North Idaho now. Been here 3 years. I did our last Reunion in 2000. Our 50th year. I did it three times, one in 1990 (40), 1995 (45) , and 2000 (50). Oh how times flies. And how great they were with attendance of about 146 classmates from 1939 to1961 at the last reunion. My beautiful daughter Shari, passed away last Sept. 3rd of Breast Cancer and was about Preston Pivoroff's age of 47. I do get the Grizzly so I did read the obituary. Geneva Ducey Servois has become a good friend of mind since the first reunion in 1990. We e-mail regularly. Dave Powers was in our class of 1950 and he was our Master of Ceremonies for our last 2000 reunion. He was Director for the Carol Burnett Show for years, also Who's Company and many other shows. Thanks for writing, and I will forward the e-mail to a few. Sorry I can't attend the SGM Big Bear High School Foundation dinner. Best Regards to you, Derise Sanden Dunlap (Class of 1950).

Hi, I would very much like to be on your mailing list and I would like to know if the class of '75 is having a reunion. When I attended school I was known by my middle name of Leslie. I would like to track down Briana O'Hare, Tina O'Hare, and Lisa Ricks. It would be nice to hear from them. Thanks so much for the e-mail. Cathryn L.L. Girard, MSgt, USAF (Retired).

Received a nice message from Joe Clark class of 72 to 75. He lives in Alamo, Texas and is the school head wrestling coach and English Department Chairperson. Home phone is 956-787-6225. Good to hear from Joe.

Have you visited the web site of the SGM BBHS Foundation. Zoltan Birsack is our web master and does a great job of keeping the website up to date.

Send me your news items you want to share with fellow alumni for the next issue of the Big Bear Alumni e mail newsletter. Hope you are having a good summer. Al Waner
